Thank you to everyone who liked the breakdown of the points races in the July on-line version of this letter and said so.   Glad to be of service.  The Issue will be carried on line for a few more months.

We continue with some more defensive help from Eddie Kantar.   #23)  To lead the top of a sequence at No-trump, the suit should have three adjacent honors (KQJx(x) ).  However, the third card in the honor sequence can be missing by one place-KQ10x(x) is considered a sequence, KQ9xx is not and the fourth highest should be led.

If the third card is missing by more than one place, lead the fourth highest.  From QJ942, lead the Queen, from QJ842, lead the Four.

#24)  To lead an honor at a suit contract, only two adjacent honors are necessary and the top honor is led.  Lead the Ace from AKx(x) the King from KQx(x) the Queen from QJxx, the Jack from J10xx and 10 from 109xx.  At No Trump lead the fourth highest from these combinationsholding four or more cards in the suit.   If you happen to have three cards headed by two adjacent honors (QJx) and think that is the suit to lead, lead the top honor and hope partner can work it out.

We have two new education offerings.  The first is How to Bid and Play Slams. It will be held  in 6 weekly sessions on Monday mornings at 10:00 starting August 13.  Coming in Sept.-beginning bridge on Saturdays at 10:00.  You will need to buy a textbook for this class.  Sign-ups in the front of the club.

New phone lists will be coming out with next month’s Tricks and Treats.  Thanks to Brent Holcomb who has really helped out the last couple years on this project.

August is the last month of NAP qualifying.  Two NAP’s for every session scheduled.

New player-Chapin area-is Phil Knox about 1000 master points.  –His cell phone is 843-655-0860, home message machine 803-816-4043.  Welcome to Columbia..

New club year, new trophy races.  For those interested in the Sol Lourie Open, don’t forget the Friday night Open game at 7:00.  It’s been running about as many tables as the Thursday night game.  But not very many ‘A’ players are in the game.  There seems to be a segment of the Friday afternoon game that enjoys playing two sessions with a trip to a favorite downtown eatery in between.  I like it. All in all, an interesting year coming up.  If you notice, it seems that our newest players are taking to the Open games with a will.  Absolutely fearless about competition.   Of course with all games stratified, there is always the C section as well as the overalls to harvest a few points.  The competition seems to do them good when they go back to play in the Invitational games.

Centurion 0-100 is as usual wide open.  Heavy graduation rate from last year leaves Jim Willrodt and Lib Odom as the favorites, but hey-take your best shot.

The Coleman Farrell non Life Master-It’s probably going to take upwards of 60 points to win this one this year.  I like Jack Wilkinson, Arnold Levinson and Everett Ness as chalk but don’t be surprised to find that one of the recent Centurion graduates (Susan McFadden, Sue Harrington, Tom Gabriel) runs off with the prize.

Henry Mills 0-2000 may not take 100+ to win this year.  But it will probably take 80.  I make Brent Holcomb the favorite.  Lil Hopkins probably has the best chance to deny him the prize.  It depends on how often Jack Wilkinson and, as before, some of the recent Centurion Grads come out to play.

Sol Lourie-Open.  Are you ready for some paradox?  This year this trophy has the longest list of bona fide contenders of them all.  There are at least eight who have a legitimate shot.  First the former winners: Ellie Hack, Hap Neuffer, Ken Fasching, Alice Moore, Brian Lipscomb.  Take your choice-all good bets.  Then there’s three more.  Marj Edens-made a good run last year, came up 3 points short.  Pat Webb-I think a threat to win any year she plays enough.  Pat Lauterbach-now playing four times a week instead of just two…..  Bob Webb and Joyce Lauterbach won’t get in enough plays to win-but if they win every time out as sometimes seems the case, who’s to say how many are enough?

Centurion Cup- 1) Lib Odom (9.91) 2) Jim Willrodt (9.68) 3) Zan Edmunds (5.03) 4) George Davey (3.41) 5) Deb Thomas (3.19) 6) Dozier Shaw (2.81) 7) Morris Mitchum (2.60) 8) Francis Robinson (2.23) 9) Pat Blume (2.10)  10) Irene Fields (1.62)
