                           TRICKS AND TREATS

For Members of the Columbia Duplicate Bridge Club

(Extended version on line at www.cbcbridge.com)

First quarter club championship was close for about four rounds as Ken and Brian built a 69.39% mountain to win.  Big winner was the director who got the best crack at the birthday party treats while the rest of you were playing bridge.  Thank-you Ed Scheiblich and Linda York for the wonderful cake.

Facts of Bridge Life (Eddie Kantor)   #13 After partner opens the bidding and second hand overcalls 1 NT to show the strength of an opening 1 NT bid, double for penalty if you have 9 or more HCP.  Bidding a suit denies the strength for a double.  Example:

You hold   S) 10-x      H)  K-J- x-x       D)  A-J-x-x-x    C)  J-10

Bidding:  Partner  1 Spade  Opponent 1 NT   You-?  Double.  You have them outgunned. You should be able to easily defeat 1 NT .  If you bid 2 diamonds, you are showing fewer than 9 points with at least 5 diamonds, usually six.

#14 It is dangerous to count extra points for short suits or long suits before the bidding starts.  If your partner bids your short suit, that reduces, not increases the value of your hand.  If your opponent bids your long suit, that decreases, not increases the value of your hand.  If you let the bidding develop, you will see whether your long or short suits are working for or against you.

The Best of February comes early-and late.  After our first GNT qualifying session on Jan 27th, we have a STAC starting January 29 and ending first weekend in February.  That first weekend you have your choice of good games-Hilton Head Sectional or the International Fund game with pre-duplicated boards and analysis ($12/pair) at CBC and the last STAC session at TriCity Sunday the 4th.  On Saturday the 24th, we have another 2-session GNT Qualifying game starting 10 AM.  Bring your sandwich for these GNT team games and we’re done about 6.  We will have snacks, desserts and drinks at the club.

We have a great new line-up for those looking for an edge.  There will periodically be sign-up sheets on the front board for new classes.   Currently, there will be a class on opening leads by George Nichols-10 AM Mondays starting Feb 5th-cost is only $40 for the entire series.

“The problem with establishing minimums is that they soon turn into maximums.”  Bit of wisdom from the UNI teacher education department.  You see the same at bridge tables.
