Late news: We have received word of the death of Winkie Hancock.  She was a long time

player and member of the CBC.  Rest in Peace.

After the New Year, we play the first week at the downtown club.  On Monday Januar7, we move

our games over to the senior center.   Note the Wednesday game time at the CSC.

Our Christmas party at Wildwood was ably organized and had a lot of volunteer help.

Fred Clemenz trucked over the tables-Mike Bitonti handled 27 tables in 3 sections of bridge.

Karen Coulter and Connie Moody delivered up a great meal. Tom Gabriel and Susan

McFadden on decorating.  We can’t forget Dick Coulter and Roy McCrory behind the bar.

Lou Riddle and Betsy Stanton made a valiant effort that fell just short of victory in the open.

The birthday party for Belle Fields was the last game of STaC week at CBC and a fun party.

We were pushing the fire code with 16 tables in play.  Brian Lipscomb/Ken Fasching and

Lee and Chris Webb were the section winners.  Belle was presented with 5 free plays at the

club, a pin and a card holder for her bridge hands.  She just got her license renewed to age

100-so all she needs is partners to use those free plays.  Many happy returns Belle!

Our December party was hosted by Harriet Blasetti and Brian Lipscomb.   Brian’s pie

was a big hit at the treats’ table and he  partner Ken Fasching were big hits at the bridge table.

We continue with some more defensive help from Eddie Kantar.  33) When there is

a short suit in dummy and declarer draws all of dummy’s trumps, the inference is

that declarer doesn’t have any losers in that suit to ruff.  Translation: It is safe to

discard that suit. 34)  When discarding, keep length parity with dummy.  If dummy has

four cards in a suit A-K-Q-8) and you have four cards (9-4-3-2), one of which (the 9) could

conceivable be a trick, be careful discarding from that suit.  Be Very Careful.  DON’T.

Sometimes it seems like players forget what game they are playing.  A few weeks ago

I found myself in a 3-3 Diamond fit at the three level.  I made the contract on 5 ruffs and four

top tricks.  However there was a 5-4 side suit fit in Hearts where we make at least four on the

lie of the cards. Opponents were sniping at each other for the rest of the round over whose fault

it was a trump never got lead to set the contract.  They completely missed the point that making

or not, they had a top and the acrimony probably cost them on subsequent boards.  I almost did

the same thing a week later when I let a 3NT contract make on a hand where they should make

5 Spades.  We all know people who refuse to compete in territory where their contracts will be

going down-also players who won’t  let you play a part score or even a game in a competitive

auction.  We can push the first set around and double the second set until they remember: it’s

not if you play the contract-or even make the contract-it’s how you compare.
