Facts of Bridge Life (Eddie Kantor) #11 A 2NT response to a takeout double shows 10-12 HCP and is not forcing. A 1NT response to a takeout double shows 6-9 HCP similar to a 1NT response to an opening bid. No trump responses to a takeout double guarantee at least one stopper (hopefully two) in the opponents’ suit. You don’t need stoppers in the other suits. Partner is supposed to have them for his double.
#12 If you play ‘five card majors’, a short diamond should only be opened with 4-4 in the majors, three diamonds and two clubs. The incidence of a one diamond opening bid with this exact distribution is less than 3%. Translation: When partner opens 1 diamond, assume he has four or more diamonds. (32-1 odds)
The Best of January comes late in the
month. Our first Grand National
Team event is Saturday the 27th.
Dodi DeFiori will be
promoting, but she can use some help.
Entries will be the usual $44/team.
Start at
There will be a District STaC starting Monday January 29 thru Feb. 3.
I was looking at the Cup races the other day. Right now Bob Webb has 20-plus points more than any Sol Lourie leader in the last five years-and the rest of the pack isn’t far behind. The leader’s average in previous years was about 53 points won here at the club-which would just about get you into the top ten this year. Then I looked at the other races and the result (on a percentage basis) was even higher. The previous leaders averaged in the low 30’s. We have more people playing and playing in Open events. The Monday and especially Saturday games are heavy majority C-flighted and Wednesday is usually a plurality of ‘C’. (Nice of you to let the A and B players play along side in your game) C players get more points even just winning their flight in an open game-and if they beat the higher flights (a not uncommon occurrence)-jackpot!!!
