TRICKS AND TREATS
For Members of the Columbia Duplicate Bridge Club
( on-line at www.cbcbridge.com)
June sees the advent of every Friday night games. These will be special events with the concurrence of the Unit Secretary. The first will be the World Wide Instant Match Point event June 1 at 7:00. (We also will hold the World Wide match point event Saturday afternoon the 2nd.) Entry is $16/pair for these two events. The second will be a STAC event 7:00, June 22. The NAP games scheduled for Fridays will be $5. Due to price increase, all other NAP games will be $6/player. Director Jeff Thomas. See you there!!
June will also see the switch of start time for the Wednesday day game from Noon to 10:00
There will be no game Wednesday, June 6 because of the Anniversary party at Wildwood at 6:00. Social hour will be followed by dinner at 7:00 and bridge at 8:00. Bridge will be divided into I/N and Stratified sections. If you have folding chairs, stick them in the trunk just in case.
STAC week is June 18-24th. All the games will be stratified, open and $6/person entries. A 0-100 section is available Friday 12:30. They play this event Tuesday night in Batesburg and Camden. Hurry on down!!
The price of the basic entry is going up to $5/player starting June 1 ($6/non-CBC members) I’m sure we appreciate the fact that as things get older, the maintenance and replacement costs don’t go down. This increase is necessary whether we go or stay-it will just be spent on different things depending on the decision.
The Board is considering switching the Thursday afternoon game from 0-1000 to OPEN. The decision will probably be made at an early meeting of the new Board.
The trophy races-Mmmm-Veeerrry close -can be seen page 3 in the on-line version. Next month is the month usually given over to the numbers on the trophy races and attendance. I’m going to try to break down the numbers by game day in extended on-line pages. .
Congratulations on a great 75.46% in an 8-table Wednesday session-Carolyn Cromer/Brian Lipscomb

Facts of Bridge Life (Eddie Kantor) #21 When leading a suit partner has bid and you have supported, lead your highest card with 3 or 4 small cards.
The high card denies an honor, partner knows of your length. If you haven’t supported, lead low from 3 or four small to deny a doubleton. The lead of a high card in partner’s unsupported suit shows shortness. With three or four cards headed by an honor (10, J, Q, K) lead low whether or not you have supported. If you plan to lead partner’s suit holding the ace, lead the Ace.
#22 If you lead from AKx(x) against suit contracts you should know: 1) The lead of the Ace is a trick one convention only! 2) After trick one, the King is lead from AKx 3) If the suit has been supported, the King is led. Leading the Ace in a supported suit or any suit partner has bid, supported or not, in theory denies the King 4) if the opponents wind up at the five or six level, the King is led. The lead of an ace at the five or six level, in theory, denies the King. 6) From AK tight, everything is reversed.
Our annual membership meeting saw the election of a new Secretary,. Jan Ripley, and the re-election of the rest of the incumbents. New at-large directors Carol Clemenz and Tom Gabriel were also elected. Leaving the Board, with thanks for their years of service to the club were Irma Murray, Brent Holcomb and Pat Lauterbach. Good luck to our new Board in a very challenging time to come.
There was a general membership meeting 6:00, Tuesday, May 22 at the club. The possible move of the club was discussed-you have your ballots-get them in the mail or drop them at the club ASAP.

Both the Centurion and Sol Lourie have three contenders with a spread of less than 1 ½ points with 3 weeks to go. If Alice wins the Open, then the Henry Mills will be added to Brent’s collection. Since I seem to have almost unlimited space on the CBCbridge.com, I thought maybe I’d break down the standings for each day and game with number of sessions played in the on-line version next month.
